03 / ABOUT THE ARTIST

GEONHO OH

A life
drawn slowly.

Geonho OhARTIST · PEN DRAWING

To keep drawing on a vast canvas. To fill an expansive landscape with nothing but fine lines of 0.05 mm.

It is much like setting a great goal in life, steadily building up days of patient effort and climbing, step by step, toward it.

No work is completed all at once. It is the time we spend refusing to give up that brings us into being.

With a single pen,
I draw a world seen slowly.

My practice began in 2012 with a felt-tip pen in front of Ponte Vecchio in Florence. The immersion of that first moment became the force that sustained a practice centered on a single pen.

I draw the beauty encountered in daily life and travel, sharing the comfort and strength found in the process. Through my work, I hope to offer a fresh way of seeing familiar places, and an experience of immersion and healing.

Artist’s statement · Immersion

I have continued drawing because I am drawn to the joy of immersion. From the first moment in 2012 when I captured the view in front of Ponte Vecchio in Florence with a single felt-tip pen, the process itself has sustained more than a decade of drawing with a pen alone. Drawing became a time of complete immersion and self-forgetting, a firm inner strength that soothed my weary body and mind and helped me live more actively.

The answer to “Why do I draw?” leads directly to the message of my work. Capturing beauty encountered in daily life and travel with a pen, and the works born from that process, have given me comfort and strength. This grew into a wish to share experiences of immersion and healing with others through my work. It has remained both my reason for drawing and the message I wish to convey.

I have sought to transform spaces and views that we might encounter and then simply pass by into something special through countless lines. I hope that time spent looking at these works becomes an opportunity to reinterpret familiar places in life with a more attentive and appreciative gaze.

What I fear most is not failure,
but no longer drawing a new line.
