Hannam-dong Seen from Hannam Bridge

한남대교에서 바라본 한남동

This view of Hannam-dong’s clustered older buildings was a familiar sight on crossings of Hannam Bridge. The pen drawing records the place while it is still present, reflecting on the value of familiar surroundings before they become something missed.

Artist’s words

Because something existed yesterday and exists today, we believe it will naturally be there tomorrow and the day after. Only when it disappears do we begin to miss its beauty and value.

This view that greets me whenever I cross Hannam Bridge may no longer exist after the day after tomorrow, and the many days after that, have passed.

The old buildings of Hannam-dong cluster together in a magnificent scene. Before each becomes something precious that is gone, I take in their beauty and value, recording on paper what I observe and feel—before that day after tomorrow arrives without my noticing.
